Why IBS is Not Just Something You Should “Learn to Live With”

“Thirty days hath September, April, June and November…”

This childhood rhyme played over and over again in my head this morning as I stared at the date on my phone and tried to piece together how on earth it came to be the last day of April.

I had big plans for April… plans to write up a series of blog posts about my struggle with IBS and dive full-force into my experience with the low FODMAP diet. But alas life does not always go according to plan…

Turns out, finding the words to sum up 7 years of pain (both physical and emotional), frustration, and confusion is easier said than done.

So instead, I’m sitting here on the last day of April, scrambling to form semi-cohesive sentences from years of built-up thoughts and feelings. Again, easier said than done.

Why April, you ask? Well if you haven’t heard by now, April is IBS Awareness Month. And while I wholeheartedly believe that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a topic that deserves year-round recognition, I couldn’t sit back and watch this month come and go without letting my voice be heard. After all, this condition has affected my life in more ways than I ever could have imagined, and I know that I’m not alone in feeling that way. (more…)

Hi friends! Long time, no chat.

Before I dive into today’s post, let me just apologize for my unintentionally intentional month-long hiatus (double apologies for the fact that this hiatus just so happened to coincide with National Nutrition Month… #dietitianfail). Life came at me real hard and real fast this past month and rather than add yet another stressor to the pile, I decided to take a step back and put the ol’ blog (err young blog..?) on the back burner.

But let me tell you, it feels good to be back. I have so much to tell you! Starting with a long overdue update on my ongoing digestive issues and my recent transition to the low FODMAP diet. But let’s save all that serious mumbo-jumbo for another day, shall we?
First, coffee. (more…)

I may be a dietitian, that doesn’t stop me from having a pretty mean sweet tooth. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you want to look at it), the 891,527,523 hours I’ve spent studying nutrition – and its never-ending slew of health and wellness implications – just so happens to be enough to keep me from leading a life fueled entirely by ice cream and cookies.
